Pre - CanSkate:This program is offered to our youngest skaters who are 3-5 years of age and who have not had any significant time on skates. It is designed to introduce children to the ice and help them become comfortable. The program teaches children the basics of how to get up when they fall down, how to move forward, basic backward movement, and how to stop. Music, toys, and games are used to help children feel ready to take the next step. Once the participant has gained these skills, they will be moved into the CanSkate program. All lessons are done in group format, so children must be somewhat independent and not require one-to-one supervision.
CanSkate: This program is offered for children with at least some on ice experience. Skate Canada has indicated that children in this group must be able to skate forward and backward independently, as well as get up onto their feet without assistance. This is a learn-to-skate program that concentrates on basic agility, balance, and control skills. Under the direction of Coach Tracy and Program Assistants, the skaters will rotate through a circuit designed to target these skills. Please note that skaters will progress through these levels at their own pace and, as a result, may move levels in the middle of the season or start in the same level next season with just a few skills to complete before moving up. This program will run for 45 minutes each skating session.
This program is for more advanced skaters and focuses on ice dance, free skate and individual element skills. This level of instruction has a Skate Canada Star 1-5 testing component to be completed by our coach (addition Skate Canada Fees apply). This program will run for one and a half hours each session, and participants are required to act as Program Assistants for our CanSkate program.
